A little more about what to expect.

the experience

Where are you located?

Dearly Held Studio serves families throughout the St. Louis area. Most sessions take place outdoors at a location thoughtfully chosen for your session, while newborn and First Hours sessions take place in your home or at the hospital/birth center. Once you're booked, we'll work together to choose the setting that best fits your family and the story we're documenting.

What is your photography style?

My approach is warm, natural, and connection-focused. I'll guide you when you need it, but I won't spend your entire session arranging everyone into perfectly posed positions. Expect plenty of movement, snuggles, play, tiny details, and the beautifully ordinary moments that actually feel like your family.

We're awkward in front of the camera. Will you tell us what to do?

Absolutely. You don't need to know how to pose or what to do with your hands - I promise. I'll give you gentle direction and prompts throughout your session while leaving enough room for genuine interaction to happen naturally.

My kids are wild. Is that going to be a problem?

Not even a little. Your children do not need to sit still, smile on command, or be on their best behavior for your session. We'll let them move, play, explore, take breaks, and warm up at their own pace. Some of the best photographs happen when we stop trying to make kids perform for the camera.

Booking + payment

How do I book a session?

Start by choosing the experience that fits your family. Sessions that can be scheduled in advance may be booked directly through the website. For sessions dependent on baby's arrival or other special circumstances, you'll begin with an inquiry so we can make a plan together.

Your session is officially reserved once all required booking steps are completed and your retainer has been paid.

How far in advance should I book?

As early as you can! Weekend and evening availability tends to fill first, particularly during spring and fall. Maternity sessions are typically photographed between 28 and 34 weeks, so I recommend reaching out or booking during your second trimester or when possible.

For newborn and First Hours sessions, you don't need to know baby's exact birthday - we'll plan around your estimated due date and finalize timing once baby arrives.

Do you require a retainer?

Yes. A non-refundable retainer is required to reserve your session date, with the remaining balance due seven days before your session.

Can I make payments?

Absolutely. You're welcome to make payments towards your remaining balance before its due date. Your full balance must be paid by the deadline specified in your booking agreement.

What should we wear?

You don't have to figure it out alone! Once you're booked, you'll receive guidance for choosing outfits that photograph beautifully while still feeling like you. In general, I recommend coordinating rather than matching and choosing comfortable pieces with complimentary colors, textures, and movement.

What happens if it rains?

For outdoor sessions, I'll keep an eye on the forecast as your session approaches. If weather conditions aren't suitable for the experience we've planned, we'll work together to reschedule. There's no need to panic over a forecast five days out - St. Louis weather likes to keep us humble.

What if someone gets sick?

Please reach out as soon as possible. Especially when working around newborns and young children, I'd much rather reschedule than have anyone push through a session while they're sick. Rescheduling policies and any applicable fees will be outlined in your booking agreement.

Can I bring my dog?

Usually, yes! Pets are family too. Just let me know ahead of time so we can choose a pet-friendly location and plan accordingly.

maternity + babies

When should maternity photos be taken?

Most maternity sessions are photographed between 28 and 34 weeks, when your belly is beautifully defined but you're hopefully still comfortable enough to move around and enjoy the experience. Every pregnancy is different, though, and we'll choose timing that makes sense for you.

When should I book my newborn photos if I don't know when my baby will arrive?

You don't need an exact birth date to reserve a newborn experience. We'll use your estimated due date for planning and finalize the session date after baby arrives.

How soon after birth do newborn sessions happen?

There's no single magical day when newborn photographs have to happen. We'll choose timing based on the experience you've booked, baby's arrival, recovery, and what feels right for your family. My newborn work is centered around connection and your baby exactly as they are - not forcing every baby into a rigid schedule.

How does a First Hours session work if I don't know when I'll deliver?

You'll reserve availability around your estimated due date rather than choosing an exact session date months in advance. Once baby arrives, you'll contact me and we'll coordinate the session based on your birth circumstances, hospital policies, recovery, and my availability.

after your session

When will I receive my photos?

Your finished gallery will be delivered within the turnaround time outlined in your booking agreement, You'll receive an e-mail as soon as your images are ready.

How will I receive my images?

You'll receive a private online gallery where you can view, download, and enjoy your finished photographs.

Do I receive the RAW or unedited images?

No. RAW and unedited files aren't delivered. The editing process is an important part of creating the finished work you see throughout the Dearly Held portfolio, and your gallery will include fully edited final images.

Can I print photos myself?

Yes. Your final digital images include personal printing rights, Professional-quality prints and products will also be available directly through your gallery for the best color and print quality. I highly recommend this option over drug store photo printing services.

What if my family doesn't look like the families in your portfolio?

You belong here. Families come in every shape, size, season, and structure. And you don't need a certain wardrobe, home, body, relationship, or version of motherhood to deserve beautiful photographs of the people you love. Come as you are. My job is to photograph your family - not turn you into someone else's.
